Black Friday, Mayo and Christmas

Warning:  Two soap box moments ahead.

Who invented the term Black Friday?  I know its genesis but I think that is the Worst name.  It is not consumer oriented, sends off a gloomy message, but somehow caught on 3-4 years ago after years of Americans doing this.  Who is responsible or naming these things?  I have to write them a letter.

Went to Mayo yesterday and it was OK, but frankly, they have some admin things to work out in their finance area, their registration process, and their staffing.  Mission did a lot better job of processing people.  EVERY "encounter" you have with Mayo has to be recorded.  What a pain. So for some of the procedures they send you on your official itinerary (cute idea there) which might take 30 minutes but they allow a lot more time. . 3 hours. . .things like that.  We may have to get a dog sitter if we continue to have to spend a full day over there plus the 2.5 hours in the car. We were both exhausted yesterday not so much with the treatment but with the waiting and things like Patrick grabbing a sandwich for us and then 30 minutes later a Candy striper came by offering us sandwiches.  I don't mean to complain too much -- but these things are pretty elementary, I think.  Their patient information is excellent however -- Mission did not provide nearly enough (at least in my opinion.)  I don't think many people have the perspective of getting chemo at two places so I may write someone at Mayo to give them some feedback as to how other places do things admin-wise.  I have no fault with the medical end.  Anyway, end of soap box two.

The neuropathy is worse this time. I have gloves to remove things from the fridge and nuke things for 30 seconds until they are room temperature.  I now have throat neuopathy as well.  This will get worse with each treatment -- 3 more to go.  More weight loss to come.

We've off to the Farmer's market today -- cannot wait to get real Florida oranges.  Nothing in the world like them.  Gotta be room temperature so we'll see what that is like.  Then we are pruning bushes and starting to organize Christmas.  Should be fun!!!. I am making special Christmas brownies for the neighbors.

Hope your weekend is fun as well!

  1. I agree completely . . . Black Friday is the worst name. When I first heard it I certainly didn’t think it had anything to do with shopping! And that’s a really good idea to give Mayo some feedback. I’m so sorry that your neuropathy is worse—that must be so frustrating. I am really glad you are in FL, though, because it’s getting a lot colder here and you would be absolutely miserable. Enjoy the Farmer’s Market and the oranges—I bet they will be delicious! Hi to Patrick, Reese, Allie, and Charlie (hahaha!). Michelle :)

  2. I was given a suggestion for you so thought would pass it along. Have you thought about medicinal marijuana? Now before you get upset with me for suggesting it I have it on good authority that it reduces the vominting and nausea by 50% to 2/3 in some cancer patients. Just a thought to try to help you along.
