This is the Man

My surgeon told us about this doctor (see below) today who invented the surgery I dream of having next year.  He's in DC although I would have it done by one of his people in JAX.

I can only have it if the chemo works, so let's light all those candles, get out all those rosaries, surround me with good karma or whatever you do, to enable me to have this surgery. It would be the final step in the process.

Guess What?  I am chain free!  The wound is healing well and the skin will close within 2 weeks and then chemo begins.  

I have a new type of ostomy bag which is better but not perfect.  I want to try even a third appliance which should be here Fed Ex tmorrow.

Dr. Paul H. Sugarbaker is the Director of Surgical Oncology at Washington Cancer Institute at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. He is a specialist in the treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma using a combination of cytoreductive surgery with intraperitoneal and systemic chemotherapy. To date, Dr. Sugarbaker has authored more than 700 scientific articles, books, and reports.
He received his M.D., with honors, from Cornell University Medical College in 1967. Dr. Sugarbaker completed his surgical fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts in 1976. He received his M.A. degree in Immunology from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1983.
Dr. Sugarbaker completed his Surgical Internship from 1967-1968 at Peter Brigham Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his Surgical Residency, also at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, from 1968-1973. He became Surgical Chief Resident at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital from 1973-1973 and he spent the next three years as a Research Trainee in Basic Surgical Sciences through Peter Bent Brigham Hospital at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts (1973-1976.)

For the following decade, Dr. Paul H. Sugarbaker was a Senior Investigator at the Surgery Branch of the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland (1976-1986), and the Head of the Colorectal Cancer Section, Surgery Branch, at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland (1981-1986).

During the late 1980’s - 1990’s, Dr. Sugarbaker held several positions. He was the Director of Surgical Oncology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia from 1986-1989; Medical Director at Washington Cancer Institute at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC from 1989-1993, and his current position, Director of Surgical Oncology at Washington Cancer Institute in Washington, DC, began in 1993.
Dr. Sugarbaker received his American Board of Surgery certification December 12, 1973, and he currently belongs to nearly a dozen societies. He is the founding member of the International Society of Regional Cancer Therapy (ISRCT) and a member of the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Surgical Oncology.
